Can You Cross A Solid White Line on Victorian Roads?

In Victoria, road markings play a crucial role in guiding drivers and maintaining safety on the roads. One of the most important markings is the solid line, which sets clear rules about when drivers may or may not cross.

According to Victorian road rules, a single continuous (solid) line generally means you must not cross or overtake if it requires you to drive over the line. These lines are commonly used on bends, hills, or areas with limited visibility to reduce the risk of head-on collisions. If there is a solid line alongside a broken line, drivers on the side of the broken line may overtake when safe, but those on the solid line side must not cross.

There are, however, some exceptions. A driver may cross a single solid line to enter or leave a road, driveway, or property, provided it is safe to do so. It is also permitted when avoiding an obstruction.

Crossing a solid line unlawfully can lead to fines and demerit points. The rule is designed to protect all road users by ensuring overtaking only occurs where visibility and conditions make it safe. Drivers should always be alert to line markings and obey them strictly.
